The Maratona is one of the most oversubscribed amateur rides in Europe: a closed road course over the Dolomite passes of Alta Badia with a field capped at about 8,000 riders. Half of those places are decided by the draw, so for most riders the EUR 3 pre-entry is the whole route in.

The organizer gives the pre-entry close as "until 12 a.m." on 10 November, which can be read as midnight at the start of the day or noon. Pre-enter well before 10 November rather than relying on the last hours.

## How the draw works

1. Fill in the pre-entry form on maratona.it with your name, address, nationality, date of birth, email, mobile number and jersey size.
2. Pay the EUR 3.00 pre-entry fee by card (or another method offered in your country). Paper entries are not accepted.
3. Enter once. The conditions of entry say a rider who sends two entries is disqualified for the next two years.
4. Wait for the draw in the second half of November 2026. The full list of drawn riders goes up on maratona.it the day after.
5. If you are drawn, you get an email with payment instructions. Pay by 10 December 2026, or your place is cancelled.
6. From 10 February 2027 you get a second email to complete your registration, including the medical certificate, by 26 May 2027.

Pre-entry is needed even by the loyalty riders who skip the draw. It is not needed if you buy a tour operator package or a charity entry.

## How the 4,000 draw places are split

The 2027 conditions of entry expect about 8,000 riders. 4,000 places go by draw among all pre-registrations. The other 4,000 go to tour operator packages, loyalty riders, charity entries and invitations. The whole field is split equally between Italian and international riders.

Within the draw, places are divided between single entries, groups of 2 to 4 and groups of 5 or more, in proportion to how many requests each category gets. A group is one chance in the draw, so entering as a group does not improve your odds; it only means you are drawn, or not, together. 100 places are drawn separately among pre-registered riders of non-European nationality, and after the draw up to 200 places go to women's groups that were not drawn, in order of pre-registration date.

The organizer does not publish the number of pre-registrations for each draw, so no exact success rate exists. Media coverage of recent editions has cited more than 30,000 pre-registrations against around 4,000 draw places, which would put the odds well below one in four, but that is not an organizer figure.

## What it costs if you are drawn

- **Pre-entry:** EUR 3.00, not refunded and not credited toward the fee
- **Registration fee:** EUR 165.00 (it was EUR 160.00 for 2026)
- **Chip deposit:** EUR 10.00, refunded when you return the chip
- **One-day licence:** EUR 10.00, required under Italian rules if you do not hold a cycling licence, and it includes third-party liability cover

The fee covers repair service on the course, feed stations, the pasta party, the Maratona jersey and the activities of riders' week.

## Routes that skip the draw

- **Tour operator packages.** Hotel plus entry from Holimites from 12 October 2026, and from the other approved tour operators listed on maratona.it. These riders start in the later groups.
- **Charity entries.** 200 on 25 November 2026 and 200 on 18 March 2027, sold on maratona.it at a higher price, with the surcharge going to charity.
- **Loyalty riders.** Anyone who has finished at least 15 editions does not go through the draw, though they still pre-enter.
- **Five years unlucky.** A rider who pre-registered but was not drawn or on the start list in any of the last five editions (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026) is readmitted automatically.

## If you miss out

If you are not drawn, the charity entries on 25 November 2026 and 18 March 2027 and the tour operator packages are the remaining routes for 2027. The organizer also runs a replacement process for registered riders who cannot ride, with 26 May 2027 as its last day. The 2028 edition is set for 2 July 2028, and a rider who keeps pre-registering and missing out is guaranteed a place after five unlucky years.
